Community Service

The Housing Authority of the City of Morgan City provides opportunities for its residents to satisfy the mandate of community service that was imposed by Congress under the Quality Housing Work and Responsibility Act of 1988 (QHWRA).  The mandate requires adult public housing residents ages 18 – 62 to perform at least eight (8) hours of volunteer service per month.  Some of the activities in which the residents are able to engage are:

  • Adult GED classes
  • At their own housing developments
  • At other agencies around the city
  • Self-help classes and seminars

All of the above activities are to assist the residents with becoming self-sufficient.  The Authority offers a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program to residents who are willing to set goals and work toward independence.  Those goals may include obtaining a job, earning a GED or other degree, or purchasing a home.
